Stefon Harris, Take 5 in Stockton, 2016

STEFON HARRIS 4 MALLETS-BW 2-4-16 GCROPPEDAPPLAUSE (1 of 1)

Jazz vibist and educator Stefon Harris headlined Stockton’s Take 5 jazz club this week, surrounded by what he called “some of the best musicians in the world,” his back-up band from the Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet from the University of the Pacific.

From Mr. Harris’ frenetic take on Thelonious Monk’s “Straight, No Chaser,” to original compositions by the UOP group, this was world-class jazz in one of California’s best kept secrets for live jazz.

STEFON HARRIS TAKE5 2-4-16 GROUP APPLAUSE (1 of 1)

The Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet: Max Boiko (piano); Zane DeBord (bass); Emmett Sher (guitar); and Tim Angulo (drums), gets a round of applause from Stefon Harris.

Every time I visit Take 5, I always ask myself, “Why the heck can’t Sacramento support a jazz and blues club”? The answer? “When I win the lottery…”
