The 58th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival, as always, had something for everyone: straight ahead jazz from the MJF On Tour all-stars led by Ravi Coltrane, Nicholas Payton and Gerald Clayton to Snarky Puppy and its 1970s jazz-rock fusion DNA with hints of Weather Report and Return to Forever.
Speaking of Weather Report, its spirit floated above the Arena stage on opening night with the Jaco’s World all-star big band tribute to the late WR bassist and composer Jaco Pastorius. Seeing Jaco’s son Felix playing what I believe was his dad’s old electric bass was something special.
MJF offered Hall-of-Famers like like Chick Corea and Wynton Marsalis, along with some newer musicians to fall in love with, including vocalists Cyrille Aimee and Nikki Hill, both of whom earned a new fan in yours truly.
I hope these images do justice to the spirit of the annual tribal gathering.
