Nepal: Eyes of the Buddha

EYES OF THE BUDDHA SWAMBANUTH TEMPLE (1 of 1)The Swayambhunath stupa in Kathmandu, Nepal is burned deeply into my brain, even some 15 years after my visit to the Himalayan capital.

Monkeys were everywhere. The thick, sweet smell of incense wafted though the air. The mystical sounds of chanting monks echoed off the walls. Butter lamps glowed in darkened corridors. Prayer wheels creaked as they spun out their blessings to the Universe.

And eyes.

The eyes of the Buddha.

All-seeing, all-knowing eyes that seemed to be watching over me on nearly every corner, on every stupa I encountered during my 2000 trek through Nepal.
